Search problems

When I search a name to add in connect information for if I do the whole name first and last they don't come up. When I do just first name then I can choose from list. Is this a glitch that needs worked out or something I will always have to deal with? I didn't realize it until yesterday and kept adding duplicate contacts thinking they didn't get added or saved.
